How do you tell if you iPhone contacts are saved onto your sim card?

I am getting a new phone tomorrow. I have the iPhone 3g and would like to make sure all my contacts are on my SIM card. But how do I check to make sure they are? And if they're not, how do I move them to my SIM card?
