How much is the cheapest I can pay for an iPhone 3G without a contract?

I want an upgrade from my Samsung and I'm looking into the iPhone. Is getting a contract better than a one off payment because I might want my iPhone for the gadgets more than the text/calls, but of course I'd use it for that as well.
